Police have recovered the bodies of three garment factory workers, including a husband and a wife, from separate locations at Savar’s Ashulia.
Police initially believed the victims killed themselves by hanging.
The bodies of the couple were recovered from a rented house owned by Afaz Uddin around Tuesday midnight, said Ashulia police Sub-Inspector Jashim Uddin.
The deceased were Barguna native Md Shawon and his wife Hafiza, identified by a single name. Both of them worked at a factory called the Rose Dresses Ltd.
Meanwhile, Ashulia police SI Shamsul Haque said the body of another garment factory worker was recovered from Khejur Bagan area on Tuesday afternoon.
The victim, Mostofa, also identified by a single name, was 35 years old and worked at Radiance Jeans Ltd.
Police said Shawon and Hafiza rented a room in Afaz Uddin’s house around five months ago.
Afaz said: “I’ve never seen any fight between Shawon and Hafiza. But it can’t be said for certain why they killed themselves.”
SI Jashim said: “It is being though that Shawon did suicide by wrapping her scarf around the fan. His wife arrived home and lowered his body on the bed after seeing it. Later she also did suicide.”
Police have yet to trace out their families, so no information on the victims was yet known, he said.
Meanwhile, SI Shamsul said: “The garment workers [Radiance Jeans] are protesting inside the factory since [Mostofa’s suicide]. A team from Industrial Police-1 and another from the army are working here.”
Shamsul said the workers were demanding an investigation into how Mostofa died.
