A series of commemorative events have been organised by political groups and government agencies in Chattogram to mark the anniversary of the Awami League regime's overthrow by a student-led mass uprising.
On Tuesday, several organisations carried out their respective observances across the city.
Chattogram Divisional Commissioner Md Zia Uddin and Deputy Commissioner Farida Khanam began the day by paying tribute to Shahidul Islam and Mohammad Alam, two people killed during the July Uprising.
Floral wreaths were placed at their graves in the Baklia area and at the Garibullah Shah Jame Mosque.
Alongside the government officials, members of the public also visited the gravesites to lay flowers and offer prayers for the martyrs.
Later in the day, a reception and discussion meeting was held at the Circuit House to honour the families of those who died and were wounded during the uprising.
Two documentary films, “July Anirban” and “The Art of Democracy”, were screened at the event.
Meanwhile, Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, organised a procession to mark the day.
The march kicked off at 10:30am from the Bahaddarhat area and proceeded to the two gates of Sholashahar, ending with a rally.
Speaking at the event, Abdul Mohaimin Patwary, the organisation’s central social service secretary, accused factions within the current government of attempting to sow division among participants of the movement.
“This attempt is an affront to the sacrifices of martyrs. These rogues will have no place in the new Bangladesh,” he said.
Patwary demanded the swift trial of those responsible for killings during the July movement and called for structural reforms in the judiciary.
He also criticised the continuation of politically motivated cases filed during the previous administration, noting that some individuals accused in connection with the violence remain free on bail.
