Two students have drowned in the floodwaters of Rangamati’s Baghaichhari Upazila.
The body of one of the flood victims was recovered from the Narikel Bagan near Baghaichhari Municipality around 5:30am on Thursday, reports bdnews24.com.
Another body was pulled out from Bongoltali Union’s Balukhali village in Baghaichhari Upazila on Wednesday afternoon.
The dead are Milton Chakma’s son, Krititto Chakma, 13, and Mohimi Chakma’s daughter, Sohamoni Chakma, 11.
Mithel Chakma, the councillor of Ward 9 of the municipality, told bdnews24.com: “Since Sunday, many low-lying areas of the Baghaichhara Upazila were flooded due to incessant rainfall and the onrush of water from upstream for three consecutive days.”
“Krititto Chakma was playing with his classmates on the road near the Narikel Bagan area on Tuesday afternoon. He drowned due to the sudden onrush of the floodwaters,” said Mithel.
According to Mithel, Krititto’s body was found two days later at the place where he had drowned.
Earlier, on Wednesday afternoon, Sohamoni Chakma drowned in the floodwaters in Balukhali village.
Shefali Chakma, a member of the reserved women’s seat of Bongoltali Union, told bdnews24.com: “Sohamoni’s body was found after she had drowned in the floodwater while playing in the pond near her house.”
According to Ishtiaq Ahmed, the chief of Baghaichhari Police Station, no complaint has been filed over the death of the two children.
Shirin Akhter, the executive officer or UNO of Baghaichhari Upazila, said: “This may have happened because the parents could not take care of the children as they were busy taking care of the house due to the sudden flooding in the area.”
“We urge local public representatives and the students to be aware of children drowning during floods.”
