The UN wants to support Bangladesh’s interim government during the transition after the fall of the Awami League government.
Gwyn Lewis, the UN resident coordinator in Bangladesh, made the remark while speaking to Home Affairs Advisor Lt Gen Jahangir Alam Chowdhury at a meeting on Monday.
“We discussed what kind of help and support they could provide to us under the current circumstances,” the home affairs advisor said after the meeting.
The UN wants to provide assistance and there was discussion of which sectors they could provide assistance and which sectors Bangladesh wanted support in.
There was also discussion of the Rohingya issue, Jahangir said.
A ‘fact-finding’ delegation from the UN will come to Bangladesh to assess the current situation, he added.
“The UN delegation may come next week,” he said in response to a question.
Jahangir is currently in charge of both the Ministry of Home Affairs and Ministry of Agriculture. Asked which he was prioritising, he said: “We are currently prioritising the issue of law and order.”
Regarding the Ministry of Agriculture, he said their priority was to find ways to increase production and bring food prices down to affordable levels.
