US pre-election monitoring panel holds meeting with EC

The visiting United States pre-election observation mission has sat down with the Election Commission to evaluate the prospects of a fair and free general election in Bangladesh, reports bdnews24.com. 

On Tuesday, Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal, along with other election commissioners, met with the US delegation at the watchdog's Agargaon offices.

The visiting delegation includes the International Republican Institute's Bonnie Glick, Jamil Jaffer and Johannana Kao, as well as representatives from the National Democratic Institute, including Maria Chin Abdullah and Manpreet Singh Anand. They arrived in Dhaka on Saturday and will remain in Bangladesh until Oct 13 to evaluate the pre-election scenario.

Before their meeting with the Election Commission, the US delegation had discussions with the Awami League, BNP, and Jatiya Party. Their agenda also includes meetings with government bodies, political organisations, civil society groups, women's associations, media, and foreign diplomats based in Dhaka.

The observation team is expected to release a statement at the end of their visit and identify any concerns regarding the conduct of the elections.
