Bangladesh Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (BTRC) Chairman Md Mohiuddin Ahmed has said they are still running some trials on resuming mobile internet service, which was disrupted amid the violence surrounding the quota protest movement.

The BTRC chairman expressed his hope that mobile internet would be restored at the start of next week, according to bdnews24.com.

“We have to see the impact on the transmission lines and data centres already repaired, as the mobile internet service will put more pressure on them. We are running some trials and if everything goes well, we plan to resume service on Sunday or Monday," he said.

As violence spread across the country amid the 'complete shutdown' programme called by quota protestors, mobile internet service was halted on Jul 17.

Broadband internet service was interrupted on Thursday night as violence surrounding the quota reform protests intensified.

It was restored on a limited basis on Tuesday, five days later. On Wednesday, households across the country saw broadband internet service restored, but mobile internet service remained off.

Users say, however, that internet speed was much slower than before.

"We are working to ensure the internet speed is as fast as before," the BTRC chairman said.

The business sector, including e-commerce, the garment sector, different internet-based trades and businesses was disrupted by the lack of internet service.

Media outlets also faced serious difficulties functioning without internet service.
