Google enhances cybersecurity on 20th 'Cybersecurity Awareness Month' anniversary

In commemoration of the 20th anniversary of Cybersecurity Awareness Month, Google is taking significant strides in revolutionising online security. The tech giant is rolling out a comprehensive suite of security and privacy solutions, spotlighting passwordless authentication, advanced privacy controls, and proactive measures against emerging threats.

Passkeys

Emphasising a commitment to user security, Google has made passkeys the default mode for its accounts. Passkeys, touted as simpler and more secure alternatives, offer a convenient sign-in experience compared to traditional and one-time passwords (OTPs). 

Relying on device security, passkeys utilise artificial intelligence (AI)-based safety features in Gmail, providing users with a robust defence against spam, phishing, and malware attacks, boasting a success rate of approximately 99.9%.

Furthermore, Gmail has recently introduced stringent requirements for large senders, enhancing email safety and user-friendliness across the platform.

Built-in privacy control

Google has also bolstered privacy controls with new updates, enabling users to safeguard their personal information easily. One notable addition is the improvement to Chrome's deletion tools on Android. 

Users will soon be able to swiftly delete the last 15 minutes of their browsing history, site data, and recent tabs with just a few clicks in the Chrome browser.

Dark web report

Google introduced a dark web report feature to address the growing concern of data exposure on the dark web. Users can now check if their Gmail address has been compromised on the dark web and receive guidance on safeguarding their data. 

Accessible through the Google app, this feature is currently available on Android and is anticipated to roll out on iOS soon.

Google password manager on iOS devices

To enhance password management across platforms, Google Password Manager is now integrated into the Google App and is an Autofill provider on iOS devices. This integration brings added convenience and security to iOS users, ensuring a seamless and protected password management experience.

Beyond Google products

Google collaborates with the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) to educate users on best cybersecurity practices. This partnership includes creating informative videos to raise awareness about cybersecurity essentials, such as multifactor authentication, strong password usage, regular software updates, and scam identification.

As Google continues to lead the charge in cybersecurity, these initiatives reflect a concerted effort to empower users with the tools and knowledge needed to navigate the digital landscape securely. The celebration of the 20th anniversary of Cybersecurity Awareness Month is not just a milestone for Google but a testament to the ongoing commitment to online safety in an ever-evolving digital era.
