Stocks end higher as investors bet on blue-chips

Stocks ended higher on Wednesday as optimistic investors put fresh bets on lucrative blue-chip shares in anticipation of quick gains.

The prime index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) rose 33.65 points to settle at 5,373.84.

The main bourse showed signs of recovery, with the benchmark index reaching a nearly 1.5-month high as buyers continued their dominance across the trading floor owing to a slight rebound in investor sentiment, driven by positive expectations, according to EBL Securities.

The blue-chip index DS30, a group of 30 prominent companies, saw an 8.30-point increase to 1912.93, while the DSES Index, which represents Shariah-based companies, saw an 8.81-point increase to 1,186.55 till the end.

The market witnessed volatility until mid-session; however, buyers took control in the latter half as optimistic investors opted to take positions in lucrative issues, which they perceived as an opportunity to harness quick gains, EBL Securities added. 

Turnover, a crucial indicator of the market, stood at Tk 5.39 billion, up 22.40 per cent from the previous trading day.

The majority of the stocks saw a price surge, as out of the 395 issues traded, 241 closed higher, 97 ended lower, and 57 remained unchanged on the DSE trading floor.

Beach Hatchery Ltd was the most-traded stock with shares worth Tk 162.42 million changing hands, followed by Unilever Consumer Care Limited, Alif Industries Limited, Orion Infusion Ltd, and Sonali Paper & Board Mills Ltd.

The Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) also ended higher with its All Share Price Index (CASPI) gaining 85 points to settle at 15157 and the Selective Categories Index (CSCX) gaining 53 points to settle at 9130.

The port city bourse traded 1.99 million shares and mutual fund units with a turnover volume of Tk 55.50 million.
