Stocks open lower as large caps slump

Stocks opened lower on Tuesday as the jittery investors continued their selling spree on sector specific large-cap shares amid the prevailing volatility in the market.

Price fall of selective large-cap stocks such as Power Grid, BAT Bangladesh, Marico, Robi and Investment Corporation of Bangladesh mostly contributed the market down at opening as they jointly accounted for 12 points fall of index after the first 30 minutes of trading.

As a result, DSEX, the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) went down by 15 points or 0.28 per cent to 5,554, after 30 minutes of trading at 10:30 am, when the report was filed.

The DSES Index, which represents Shariah-based companies, also lost 2 points to 1,220 while the blue chip index DS30, a group of 30 prominent companies, saw 3 points decline to 1991 till then.

Turnover, a crucial indicator of the market, remained low and amounted to Tk 1.28 billion after 30 minutes of trade.

Of the issues traded, 80 advanced, 221 declined and 38 remained unchanged till then.

The Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) also opened lower with the CSE All Share Price Index – CASPI –losing 28 points to 15,909, also at 10:30 am.
