Air conditioners in demand even as winter approaches: An unexpected trend in Bangladesh

Updated :

As the cool breeze of winter begins to settle over Bangladesh, one might expect a decrease in the demand for air conditioners (ACs). However, a surprising trend has emerged this year, with many consumers still flocking to stores and online platforms to purchase AC units, despite the colder temperatures. This growing demand highlights changing consumer preferences and the increasing importance of year-round climate control.

Shifting Consumer Preferences

Traditionally, the demand for air conditioners peaks during the scorching summer months, as people seek relief from the intense heat. However, in recent years, the seasonal nature of AC sales has started to blur. Experts suggest that a combination of factors is contributing to this shift.

Sajedur Rahman, Director of Star Tech Ltd, shared that online sales of air conditioners have experienced a significant increase. Historically, online sales have averaged around 200 units per month; however, recent figures show a remarkable surge, with sales now reaching approximately 450 units per month. This represents a 125% growth in sales, reflecting a substantial shift in consumer demand and purchasing behavior.

Rising Awareness of Air Quality and Comfort

Many customers are becoming more aware of the importance of air quality and consistent indoor comfort. With increasing pollution levels and high humidity, particularly in urban areas, more households are opting for air conditioning as a solution to regulate both temperature and air quality.

“We’ve had many customers tell us they want to create a comfortable indoor environment regardless of the season," says Shahjahan Fahim, In-Charge of Multiplan Center (Retail sales at Star Tech Ltd). "Air conditioners with air-purifying filters are in high demand, especially among families with young children or elderly members.”

The Dual Functionality of Hot and Cool ACs

A growing number of consumers are also looking for air conditioners that can offer both cooling and heating functionalities. These dual-purpose AC units, which provide both hot and cold air, are becoming increasingly popular. Brands like Gree, Midea, Panasonic, and Walton are leading the way with these versatile units that cater to both summer and winter needs.

“Hot and cool ACs are a game changer," says B. M. Sharif Shadiq, In-Charge of the IDB Branch. "Customers love that they can use the same unit throughout the year, whether it's for cooling in the summer or heating in the winter. It's an investment that pays off in the long run.”

With the energy-efficient technology available in modern AC units, many people now see them as a cost-effective solution for managing their summer heat vis-a-vis winter chill.

Off-Season Discounts: The Best Time to Buy AC

Winter brings a wave of attractive discounts, as many retailers and manufacturers offer off-season promotions to clear stock. This has led to a significant uptick in sales, with customers taking advantage of lower prices. Popular brands like Samsung, Haier, and General are offering significant discounts during the winter season, making it an ideal time for customers to make a purchase.

"Typically, we purchase around 220 units for sale, but due to the increased demand, we are now required to purchase approximately 460 units," explains Al Imran, Senior Assistant Manager (Purchase & Procurement) at Star Tech Ltd. "During the winter season, we typically see a drop in sales, but that’s also when we offer the best deals. People are taking advantage of these off-season discounts to secure their air conditioners before prices rise again in the summer."

Corporate Demand for Air Conditioners

It’s not just individual consumers driving the demand for ACs. Many businesses, especially in urban areas, require a climate-controlled environment throughout the year. Corporate demand for air conditioners remains steady, with many companies investing in high-performance, energy-efficient systems.

"Many businesses are upgrading their office systems, investing in high-performance, energy-efficient ACs that can handle both cooling and heating. They’re seeing the long-term benefits of a consistent indoor climate," says Md. Shariful Hoque, HO/Retail Corporate at Star Tech Ltd.

Economic Considerations

Despite the seasonal shift, some customers are purchasing air conditioners in anticipation of upcoming price hikes or the desire to lock in sales during off-peak times. "We expect a price increase in the coming months, so many customers are acting now," says one supplier. This indicates that economic factors, such as inflation and supply chain disruptions, are playing a role in influencing consumer buying decisions.

The Role of Modern Technology and Energy Efficiency

Modern air conditioners are designed to be energy-efficient, making them an attractive option for those looking to save on electricity bills, especially during the winter months when heating needs also contribute to energy costs. With many new models offering both cooling and heating functions, consumers are investing in appliances that promise long-term benefits.

"Today’s ACs are much more energy-efficient than before," states an engineer from Star Tech. "They don’t just cool; they also provide heating more cost-effectively."

Final Verdict: A Year-Round Essential

As winter approaches, the demand for air conditioners in Bangladesh continues to rise, reflecting a shift in consumer behavior towards year-round climate control. ACs are no longer viewed as a seasonal luxury but as essential appliances that provide comfort, improve air quality, and offer energy-efficient solutions. Alongside this trend, sales of winter products like geysers and room heaters are also increasing as people seek consistent indoor comfort throughout the year.

This growing demand is driven by factors such as rising pollution, humidity, smart technology adoption, and economic incentives like off-season discounts. With dual-functionality AC units offering both cooling and heating, the trend shows no signs of slowing down. As consumers take advantage of off-season deals, the demand for climate control products in Bangladesh is set to continue growing year-round, proving that climate comfort has become an essential part of daily life.
