Bangladesh Bank lends banks, financial institutions Tk 250 billion in one day

Bangladesh Bank on Wednesday lent banks and financial institutions (FIs) around Tk 250 billion, the central bank said in a press release on Thursday.

The move comes as banks and FIs faced huge cash withdrawals on the reopening day following five days of closures and internet interruptions.

Shariah-based banks borrowed around Tk 15 billion, while the remainder was taken up by other banks and financial institutions, according to the release.

Bank officials said that the borrowed funds would be used to cover deficits in cash reserve requirements and meet surging customer withdrawals.
