Bangladesh permits egg import

Bangladesh government has permitted four companies to import 40 million pieces of eggs to reign over the rocketing domestic market.

Mim Enterprise, Tiger Trading, Prime Energy, and Arnab Trading-- four private companies got the permit from the commerce ministry on Sunday, an official said.

Each company could bring 10 million pieces of eggs meeting five conditions including importing the item from an avian influenza-free country, he said.

The decision comes amid fueling the price of the essentials in the local market for the last one and a half months.

Egg price reached a record Tk 15 a piece in mid-August which later reduced to Tk 13-13.25. 

The ministry fixed the maximum price of an egg at Tk 12 a piece on September 14.

But the price remained at Tk 12.5-13.2 a piece in the market until Monday morning, according to city groceries.
