Bangladesh to import onion from 9 more countries

The government has approved the import of onions from nine countries apart from India.

The countries are China, Egypt, Pakistan, Qatar, Turkey, Myanmar, Thailand, the Netherlands and the UAE, the agriculture ministry said in a statement on Thursday.

Under the approval, a total of 21,580 tonnes of the bulb will be brought in from these countries, it said.

The highest amount of the vegetable import will be from Pakistan, the ministry added in the statement.

Over the last couple of days, domestic onion prices have surged due to India's 40 per cent export tax on the bulb.
