Mohammad Ali Khokon on Sunday resigned from the post of president of Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA) on personal grounds.

Shawkat Aziz Russell, chairman of Amber Group and former vice president of BTMA, on the same day, replaced Mr Khokon following an emergency board meeting.

The BTMA board of directors in a meeting held at its Gulshan office today accepted Mr Khokon’s resignation letter who was the president of the BTMA over the last seven years since his first term in 2018.

BTMA general secretary Brigadier General Md Zakir Hossain (Retd) confirmed the matter to The Financial Express.

In the resignation letter, Mr Khokon said after much consideration and reflection, “I have decided to resign from my position as President of BTMA effectively.”

“This decision was not made lightly. As I have shared with some of you earlier that both my physical health and business have been suffering, which now needs my attention,” read the resignation letter.

Mr Khokon, however, did not attend the meeting.

“After a period of personal reflection and consultation with my family, I have concluded that it is the right time for me to resign. I believe this transition will allow the association to benefit from fresh perspectives and leadership,” Mr Khokon wrote in the letter.
