The mobile phone subscribers and netizens increased for the seventh consecutive month in July 2023 with 1.38 million new mobile phone users and 1.54 million new internet users, according to latest data released Wednesday.
In the first seven months of this year, the internet users increased by 6.52 million and mobile subscribers by 7.28 million, making a total of over 187.48 million mobile subscribers and 130.94 million internet users.
The rising trend continued for the period under review following the industry's losing 3.5 million mobile subscribers and 2.0 million internet users in the second half of 2022, according to the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC).
Of the total internet users, more than 118.79 million are mobile internet subscribers and 12.15 million are broadband users.
Currently, Grameenphone has 81.89 million mobile subscribers, followed by 56.82 million of Robi, 42.30 million of Banglalink and 6.47 million of Teletalk.
The third-largest mobile operator Banglalink has gained the highest number of mobile subscribers in the first seven months period of this year, adding 2.49 million mobile subscribers.
The second-largest operator Robi Axiata gained 2.42 million mobile subscribers during the period.
The largest operator GP gained 1.94 million subscribers so far this year while losing around 3.6 million customers due to a ban on selling its SIMs, imposed by the BTRC on June 29 last year over the quality of services. The restriction was, however, lifted on January 02 this year.
The state-owned operator Teletalk has been losing subscribers continuously during the seven months of this year.
According to BTRC, a subscriber means the biometrically verified subscribers/subscriptions who are active (in terms of voice, data, sms, etc.) at least once in the preceding 90 days.
