The Cabinet on Thursday approved the draft of the ‘Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (amendment) Ordinance-2024’ in principle, to ensure better service for citizens and keep administrative activities running.

At a meeting of the Advisory Council, the Cabinet Division has given the final nod to the draft tabled by the Local Government Division of the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development & Co-operatives, UNB reports.

The main characteristic of the amended law relates to the government's power to hire and fire staff for WASA, following some of the controversies that arose during the recent reign of Taqsem A. Khan

1. Three sections and one sub-section have been inserted in the proposed amendment.

2. The government will be able to remove and appoint any managing director of the WASA considering necessity in the public interest (section 25 ka).

3. The government will be able to remove and appoint any official and staff of the WASA considering necessity in the public interest (section 30 ka).

4. The government will be able to remove any WASA board considering necessity (section 42 ka).

The ordinance has been finally approved upon vetting by the Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division at the advisory council meeting.
