Fariduddin Ahmed named new chairman of Union Bank

Md Fariduddin Ahmed, former Managing Director & CEO of Islami Bank Bangladesh PLC, Exim Bank PLC, Advisor of Exim Bank PLC, and Consultant (Islamic Banking) at Meghna Bank PLC, has been appointed as an Independent Director and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Union Bank PLC by Bangladesh Bank, according to a press release.

Mr Farid has extensive experience in Islamic banking and finance. He joined Islami Bank Bangladesh PLC on its first day of establishment, 30 March 1983. He began his banking career through the Bangladesh Bank recruitment committee in 1977 and was initially placed at Sonali Bank PLC.

He was involved in developing the systems and procedures for Islamic banking in Bangladesh. Mr Farid also contributed to the establishment of an Islamic bank in Nigeria named "Jaiz Bank," as nominated by Islami Bank Bangladesh PLC.

Mr Farid is currently associated with many Islamic banks, financial institutions, and corporate bodies as Chairman or a member of their Shariah Supervisory Committees.

He has attended various training programmes, participated in numerous seminars and conferences both at home and abroad, and presented papers on Islamic banking and finance.

Mr Farid is the recipient of the Central Shariah Board Award for Islamic Banking for his contributions to Islamic banking in Bangladesh. Additionally, he was awarded the Nawab Sir Salimullah Gold Medal for his significant contributions to the establishment, growth, and development of Islamic banking in Bangladesh.

He is a widely travelled individual and has visited the UK, USA, Germany, Switzerland, France, Japan, China, Malaysia, Indonesia, Iran, Pakistan, India, Singapore, Hong Kong, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Oman, Bahrain, Australia, and Macau.
