Govt to prepare eco-friendly goods’ list

The government has started the process of identifying environment-friendly goods under its negotiations with the World Trade Organisation (WTO), officials said.

Under the initiative, the designated cell of the commerce minister, which deals with the WTO affairs, has decided to prepare a list of such goods.

It will also submit a charter of recommendations to the government on the country's ongoing talks with the WTO on environmental issues after a thorough analysis.

"We had a meeting recently to make fruitful the negotiations with the WTO on trade and environment and market access of environment-friendly goods," said a commerce ministry official.

Seven working groups have already been formed following a decision made in the meeting, he told the FE.

The official said the formation of 'a core committee' was discussed to identify the environment-friendly goods.

The meeting also suggested formation of green investment bureau, carbon credit research wing, climate finance council and green climate fund.

Countries like China have provided the lists of such goods to the WTO, seeking tariff concession on them.

About the progress in the meeting, the official said forest, environment and climate change ministry has been asked to identify and prepare environment-frienly goods lists after discussing with the stakeholders.
