A consortium of top six Japanese companies is likely to get operation and maintenance (O&M) work of the 3rd terminal of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA).
The authorities concerned have accepted its conceptual O&M plan under the public private partnership (PPP) arrangement, according to sources.
The consortium comprises Japan Airport Terminal Company, Sumitomo Corporation, Sojitz, Narita International Airport Corporation, Sojitz Corporation General Trading Company, and Jalux Inc.
They shared their plan at a meeting with the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism, Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) and PPP Authority in Dhaka on Thursday. Sources said the consortium, led by Sumitomo Corporation, has long been lobbying for the O&M work of the under-construction terminal being built with Japanese financial assistance. Later on the day, a Japan-Bangladesh Joint Platform meeting agreed to form a sub-working group on forming the consortium, they added. Meeting sources said the consortium proposed to conduct further study on the O&M as its working area would be at the terminal 3, cargo terminal and ground handling.
The CAAB has been implementing the 3rd terminal project after signing an agreement in January 2020 with a consortium of Japanese companies Mitsubishi Corporation and Fujita Corporation, and South Korea's Samsung C&T Corporation.
The terminal, which is an extended part of the HSIA, has been built on the south side of the airport's main terminal at an estimated cost of Tk 214 billion. It is expected to be capable of handling 22 million passengers annually.
