National committee formed to boost fisheries sector growth

The government has formed a 29-member national committee on fish and shrimp to formulate necessary policy aimed at fostering growth in the sector.

Members of the committee, headed by the Prime minister, include 12 ministers and junior ministers from different ministries, including fisheries and livestock, finance, industries, home, food, land and agriculture.

The cabinet division on April 18 issued a gazette notification in this regard.

The committee that will sit at least once a year will give instructions about how to make best use of land and water for fish cultivation with the help of environment-friendly and suitable technology, according to the gazette notification.

It will also set out necessary guidelines on research to attain technical know-how to advance blue economy.

On the same day, the cabinet division also issued another gazette notification, announcing formation of a 39-member executive committee of the national committee on fish and shrimp.

The executive committee led by fisheries and livestock minister is mandated to convene meeting once every four months to prepare agenda for the national committee.

It will also work towards implementing the recommendations made by the national committee, according to the notification.
