The price of onions jumped to maximum Tk 150 per a kilogramme on Saturday, marking a hike of Tk 10 per kg overnight.
Price of the local spice witnessed a Tk 20-30 a kg hike in last three days, said groceries. Imported onion price surged to Tk 130 a kg marking 15-20 a kg further hike in three days.
Traders attributed the hike to higher import cost and a depleting stock of local crops.
Meanwhile, market observers have sensed a market distortion by big traders in Faridpur, Gopalganj, Pabna, Rajbari and Shyambazar wholesales in Dhaka aim to cash unethical profits.
Md Farid, a salesman of an grocery at West Dhanmondi in the city, has told the FE that prices have further increased by Tk 10 a kg at Karwan Bazar wholesales in the morning today.
He said wholesale price of local onion soared to Tk 136-138 a kg.
Imported Indian onion is being wholesaled at Tk 115-120 a kg.
Jakir Hossain, a trader at Rayerbazar-Beribadh wholesale, says prices of local onion starts increasing in the mokams like Faridpur, Rajbari, Gopalganj, Pabna.
He said import has declined amid a price surge in India.
Bangladesh has a demand for 3.2 to 3.5 million tonnes of onion annually. The country produces 2.7 to 3.0 million tonnes.
