In a major leap towards digital tax compliance, more than 1.7 million taxpayers filed their income tax returns online in the fiscal year 2024-25, which ended on Monday.
The record number marks a significant milestone in the National Board of Revenue's (NBR) drive to automate and simplify the tax process for citizens.
According to a press release issued by the NBR on Monday, a total of 1,712,492 taxpayers submitted their returns online, while 2,165,321 individuals completed e-return registrations during the fiscal year.
The revenue authority hailed this as a "landmark step" in its broader digital transformation initiative, designed to make tax services more accessible, efficient, and user-friendly.
The simplified online return submission system has been met with a strong response from taxpayers, many of whom are now filing voluntarily, the NBR said.
It reaffirmed its commitment to delivering uninterrupted services throughout the year, including instant online issuance of income tax certificates.
Additionally, under Section 180 of the Income Tax Act, 2023, taxpayers may submit revised returns online within 180 days of their original submission if any errors or omissions are detected. This facility, the NBR noted, can be accessed conveniently from home.
The tax authority expressed its gratitude to all who filed returns online and encouraged continued use of its year-round digital services for return submission and certificate collection.
