Renovation works of Kalurghat Bridge completes this month

The renovation works of the ageing Kalurghat Bridge in Chattogram will be completed within this month.

Railway official sources said the renovation works on Kalurghat Bridge, that started on 1st August of 2023, will be completed this month.

"The carpeting works on the Khalurghat Bridge is almost completed. Construction works of the walkway added to the bridge for the first time has been completed. So, the bridge is now ready for traffic movement." sources said.

Jisan Dutta, engineer of Bangladesh Railway (BR), Eastern Zone, said that the bridge will be opened to vehicles and pedestrians this month as the renovation work on the old bridge has been almost completed.

However, the higher authorities of the railway department will decide on the date of opening the bridge for traffic movement, said the engineer.

On the advice of the expert engineers of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), the railway authorities have started the renovation works of the bridge at a cost of Taka 550 million (Tk 55 crore) aims to make the bridge sustainable for heavy trains and vehicles, BSS reports.

Bangladesh Railway appointed Max Infrastructure Limited as the contractor for the renovation of the bridge.

The 239-metre Kalurghat dual-purpose bridge that was built in 1930 over the Karnaphuli River became unfit for both train and road traffic.
