BGMEA election: Kochi-led Sammilito Parishad wins all 35 director posts

The Sammilito Parishad, led by SM Mannan (Kochi), has won all the 35 posts of directors at the biennial election of the apparel apex body, BGMEA, for the term of 2024-26.

Of them, 26 directors were elected from Dhaka and nine others from Chattogram.

According to the provisional results of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) election commission, Mr. Kochi, chairman of Seha Design (BD) Ltd, received 1,510 votes, the highest.

Mr. Kochi, currently the senior vice president of BGMEA, is also the general secretary of the Dhaka North City Awami League.

The newly elected directors from Dhaka include Shahidullah Azim, Asif Ashraf, Abdullah Hil Rakib, Md Imranur Rahman, Arshad Jamal (Dipu), Miran Ali, Shovon Islam, Haroon Ar Rashid, Mohammad Sohel Sadat, Ashikur Rahman (Tuhin), Anowar Hossain (Manik), Shams Mahmud, Mesbah Uddin Khan, Khandoker Rafiqul Islam, Md Nasir Uddin, Rajiv Chowdhury, Abrar Hossain Sayem, Md Shahadat Hossain, Md Jakir Hossain, Nusrat Bari Asha, Md Mohiuddin Rubel, Shehrin Salam Oishee, Md Nurul Islam, Saifuddin Siddiquie Sagar, and Md Rezaul Alam (Miru).

And the elected directors from the Chattogram region include Rakibul Alam Chowdhury, Syed Nazrul Islam, Mohammed Musa, Amzad Hossain Chowdhury, M Ahsanul Hoque, Mostafa Sarwar Riyadh, Mohammed Rakib Al Naser, Gazi Md Shahid Ullah, and Md Absar Hossain.

The BGMEA election took place on Saturday at the BGMEA's Dhaka and Chattogram offices simultaneously.

In the election, 2,226 votes, out of a total of 2,496, were cast in Dhaka and Chattogram, with an 89.18 per cent voter turnout.

In Dhaka, 1,839 votes, out of 2,032, were cast, and in Chattogram, 387 votes, out of 464, were cast.

Two panels, the Sammilito Parishad and Faisal Samad-led Forum, contested the elections.

The tenure of the current BGMEA board, led by Faruque Hassan, which took charge in April 2021, will expire on April 12. Its tenure had been extended twice -- six months each time.
