Shahjalal Islami Bank donates Tk 1 million for destitute thalassemia patients

Shahjalal Islami Bank PLC has donated Tk 1 million to Bangladesh Thalassemia Hospital to facilitate and accelerate better treatment for destitute thalassemia patients

The SEVP and company secretary of the bank Md. Abul Bashar handed over the cheque worth Tk 1 million to Bangladesh Thalassemia Hospital’s Executive Director Dr. A. K. M Ekramul Hossain Swapan during a ceremony on Sunday, according to a press release.

General Secretary of Bangladesh Thalassemia Samity Engineer Md. Mosharraf Hossain, Chief Medical Officer of Bangladesh Thalassemia Hospital Dr.Kabirul Islam, the FAVP of Shahjalal Islami Bank PLC Md. Sanaur Rashid (Sagor), the JAVP and In-charge of the Public Relations Department (CC) K.M. Harunur Rashid and the Executive Officer of Shahjalal Islami Bank Foundation Md. Kamal Mia were also present while handing over the donation cheque.

According to the press statement, Bangladesh Thalassemia Society and Hospital is a non-profit voluntary organisation formed and run by Thalassemia patients and their parents. Thalassemia is a fatal hereditary disease of anaemia. If both parents carry the gene for this disease, their child is likely to be born with thalassemia. According to a survey, 10 to 12 per cent of people in Bangladesh are carriers of thalassemia.

At present, more than thousands of children in Bangladesh are suffering from this disease and every year 10-15 thousand children are born with this disease.

With regular blood transfusions and regular intake of some expensive medications that require Tk 7,000 to 20,000 per month, the patient can survive. One can know whether he is a carrier of this disease by HP electrophoresis test from Bangladesh Thalassemia Society by spending only a few amounts of money.
