All textile mills under the Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA) will remain closed for the next three days during the general holidays, beginning Monday, followed by a fire at a spinning mill.
“In view of the deteriorated law and order situation in the country and the government's declaration of three-day holiday from August 5–7, all BTMA member mills will remain closed during this period,” BTMA secretary general Zakir said in a text message.
A decision on the opening of the mills will be taken based on the situation and further government declarations, he added.
Meanwhile, a spinning mill, namely Outpace Spinning at Gazipur, was burned after outsiders set fire on Sunday noon, a BTMA official said, adding there were other incidents in some mills.
Most garment factories located in Narayanganj BISCIC suspended operation in the morning after workers were forced to come out of a few units by outsiders.
Following the incidents, most factories at BSCIC were closed by the respective factory authorities, said BKMEA vice president Fazlee Shamim Ehsan.
Talking to the FE, Bangladesh Garment Manufacturer’s and Exporters Association (BGMEA) vice president Abdullah Hil Rakib said they would try to keep operations in factories as last holidays, using workers identity cards as a curfew pass.
He also confirmed a few incidents of workers being brought out of factories.
He, however, said most factories in Gazipur were in operation on Sunday, and workers left units after eight hours of daily work, mostly around 4.0 as they started at 7.0 am.
