Uber supported economic growth in Bangladesh with Tk 5.5 billion of economic activity in 2024, according to a report.
Uber, the leading ridesharing app in Bangladesh, released its economic impact report 2024 at an event on Tuesday.
Md Ehsanul Hoque, senior secretary at Road Transport and Highways Division, and Mohammed Yasin, BRTA chairman, were present at the function.
The report, compiled by Public First, said Uber's Moto and Auto services supported Tk 9.2 billion of economic activity in Bangladesh in 2024.
These services have become essential for meeting the growing demand for affordable and convenient last mile connectivity.
The platform also played a key role in time savings for its riders, with 82 per cent of riders using Uber for commuting to and from work, saving an estimated 1.1 million hours annually, valued at Tk 940 million.
The report highlights the factors driving the economic contribution of Uber in Bangladesh:
In 2024, driver-partners earn an additional 42 per cent a year in higher income through Uber, relative to their next best alternative type of work.
In 2023, Uber generated Tk 2.9 billion in additional value for Bangladesh's tourism industry, which now supports 2.14 million jobs in 2024 In 2024, rides with Uber generated Tk 669 billion in consumer surplus for riders in Bangladesh.
Some 50 per cent of drivers agree that they would have fewer job opportunities without the platform.
A total of 76 per cent of drivers say Uber is the first app they have received earnings through.
An estimated 81 per cent of riders agree that booking with Uber is much easier than hailing a ride in the street.
As many as 86 per cent of riders agree that Uber app is an important transportation innovation. Some 95 per cent of female riders say that safety is an important factor when choosing to use the Uber app.
Eighty-nine per cent of riders consider Uber to be the safest way for them to travel home.
